Rice Science Center Focuses on Worthwhile and Environmentally Friendly Use of Resources 🌾

· 2 min read

The Rice Science Center, together with the Department of Animal Science and the Department of Agricultural Machinery, Faculty of Agriculture at Kamphaeng Saen, joined forces to manage “Riceberry straw” from the seed production plot by baling it for animal feed, adding value as an example for farmers beyond income from selling rice seed.

The remaining straw is decomposed and fermented into organic fertilizer, returning nutrients to the soil, reducing the cost of fertilizer that would have to be added, and preparing for planting in the next season.

This approach also helps solve the problem of straw burning in paddy fields, an important cause of PM2.5 dust and greenhouse gas emissions, a factor in global warming.

The Rice Science Center therefore promotes sustainable rice straw management for a better environment, while creating income and security for Thai farmers.
